Learn More About Rosacea Subtypes
Disease features often occur in various combinations, four Rosacea subtypes have been classified and agreed upon to assist in the diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment.
Subtype1 is Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea
which is characterized by flushing episodes lasting more than 10 minutes and persistent erythema of the central face. Telangiectasia is often present. These patients may also complain of central facial edema, stinging and burning, roughness or scaling, and a history of flushing alone is common.
Subtype2 is Papulopustular Rosacea which is characterized by persistent erythema, with transient papules and/or pustules on the central face. Subtype2 resembles acne, but without comedones; however, acne and papulopustular rosacea can occur simultaneously. Papules and pustules also can occur around the mouth, nose, or eyes.
Subtype 3 is Phymatous Rosacea
which includes thickening skin and nodularities. Rhinophyma, nose involvement is the most common presentation; however, ears, chin, and forehead may be involved.
Subtype 4 is Ocular Rosacea
which should be considered if the patient has one or more of the following ocular signs: watery or bloodshot eyes, foreign body sensation, burning or stinging.
Measures Followed to Treat Rosacea at Cincinnati Aesthetics
1. A proper cleansing and moisturizing routine is an important part of Rosacea management.
Large proportions of Rosacea patients have dry skin, and some topical Rosacea medications (e.g. topical metronidazole) can cause further drying and irritation.
The daily uninterrupted use of sunscreen is a cornerstone in the long - term management of Rosacea. Sun exposure is the leading cause of Rosacea flares, and patients should be advised to use a sunscreen daily.
3. Oral antibiotic therapy
An anti-inflammatory dose doxycycline (40 mg delayed - release formulation) has been formulated for the treatment of Rosacea. However, because of cost effectiveness standpoint, we use the 100 - mg formulations and delayed - release in combination with 1% metronidazole topical gel in our practice for effective treatment of moderate to severe Rosacea with fewer gastrointestinal effects.
4. Topical therapy

5. Light-based therapies
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy has been used with success to treat vascular symptoms of Rosacea. IPL utilizes selective photothermolysis with a broad spectrum of light to destroy targeted vessels by coagulation while sparing surrounding tissue, IPL is advantageous because it can penetrate the skin more effectively any other laser than in the market.
